11.44 lakh PANs deactivated

The government gives a googly again; deleting or de-activated over 11.44 lakh permanent account numbers (PANs).This information was given by the minister of state for finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

The people under consideration are the ones’ with multiple PAN cards, people with PAN cards having a false identity or a non- existent person . In some cases, the PAN card details of people have been used to create fake identities and this has been used to deceive others at various levels.

Now, this has led to great confusion about the validity of PAN cards. This facility to delete or de-activate the PAN is available with the Assessing Officer through application software.

In order to check if your PAN card is valid or not you need to follow this step by step guide:

1) First, you need to log on to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on ‘Know your PAN’ which is on the left column under the ‘Services’ section.

2) As soon as you click on the ‘Know your PAN’ tab, you’ll be redirected to a page where you are required to fill in your details like name, status, date of birth and contact number.

3) Once you have submitted the required details, you will be redirected to another page where you will have to put the OTP sent on your registered mobile number.

4) Enter the OTP No. received and click on ‘Validate’.

5) If your PAN card details haven’t been duplicated or issued to multiple people, the last page will show only your PAN card details as ‘Active’.

6) But if you have more than one PAN card registered under the same personal details, a pop-up message will appear that says, “There are multiple records for this query. Provide additional information.” In this case you’ll have to provide your father’s name and other identification details.
