Ryan Hurst Cast As Kratos In Prime Video’s ‘God of War’

In a casting decision that has sent shockwaves through the gaming and television communities, Amazon Prime Video has officially announced the face of the Ghost of Sparta. Ryan Hurst, best known for his fan-favorite roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, has been cast as Kratos in the upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War.

The announcement comes with a heavy dose of irony that die-hard fans of the franchise will appreciate: Hurst is already a veteran of the God of War universe, having provided the motion capture and voice for Thor—Kratos' legendary rival—in the 2022 video game blockbuster God of War Ragnarök.

From the God of Thunder to the God of War

The casting marks a significant pivot for the franchise's live-action debut. While many fans had speculated that Christopher Judge, the beloved voice actor for Kratos in the Norse-era games, might reprise the role, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have opted for Hurst to carry the Leviathan Axe.

Hurst’s portrayal of Thor earned him a BAFTA Award nomination, proving he already understands the emotional weight and mythological gravity required by the series. Now, he will trade Mjölnir for the Blades of Chaos to portray the stoic, ash-covered Spartan.

Physically, Hurst is an imposing choice. Standing at 6-foot-4 with a history of playing rugged, emotionally complex characters like Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead, he possesses the raw physicality needed to embody the retired god trying to leave his violent past behind.

A New Creative Direction

The God of War series has seen significant development shifts in recent months. The project is now being helmed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, the acclaimed creative force behind Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. Moore took over the reins late last year, steering the production toward a faithful adaptation of the 2018 video game reboot.

Adding to the prestige, Frederick E.O. Toye, fresh off his success directing episodes of Shōgun and The Boys, has been tapped to direct the first two episodes.

According to the official synopsis, the series will bypass Kratos’ early days in Greece and jump straight to the Norse wilds. The story follows Kratos and his estranged son, Atreus, on a dangerous journey to the highest peak in the realms to spread the ashes of Kratos’ late wife. It is a tale not just of monsters and magic, but of a father trying to teach his son how to be a god, while the son teaches his father how to be human again.

What’s Next?

With a two-season order already secured, production is currently ramping up in Vancouver. While no release date has been set, the confirmation of the lead actor suggests that filming is imminent.

The search is now on for the actor who will play Atreus, a role that is just as critical to the show’s success as Kratos himself. For now, fans can rest easy knowing that the Ghost of Sparta is in the hands of an actor who has already gone toe-to-toe with gods—and lived to tell the tale.
